GABIONS
Groundwork Services
Gabions are baskets made of flexible steel wire mesh, laced together
and filled with stones to form monolithic structures that can
provide a cost effective and sometimes unique solution to many
problems in river works, soil stabilisation, flood and scour
protection and coastal defence.
- FLEXIBILITY - This enables the
wall to take up ground settlements or an apron to follow the
scoured profile until a stable position is reached.
- PERMEABILITY - This stops
hydrostatic pressure being built up behind retaining structures
and makes gabions a unique solution in the stabilisation of
ground movement.
- COST EFFECTIVENESS - Requiring
unskilled labour and limited plant, a gabion structure can be
built anywhere at low cost.
- APPEARANCES - Gabion
structures are preferred in parks and areas of natural beauty as
very pleasing effects can be achieved especially if vegetation
growth is encouraged.
- DURABILITY - The product has a
history of over 100 years performance. The use of P.V.C. coated
products over the last 40 years enhances the range of possible
applications. Improved coating processes are available for both
the wire and the extruded process on to the wire for all
Groundwork Services products. In certain situations a further extension
of design life may be possible. Please enquire about the new
Galmac and Polimac coating processes.
GEOTEXTILES
Conventional
construction methods result in substantial volumes of aggregate
being forced into a wet sub-base and lost, without significant
stability gain. With Groundwork Services woven fabric less aggregate is needed
to achieve stability, thereby reducing construction time and costs,
and allowing work to continue under wet conditions.
